Running Biomechanic Assessments

Running Biomechanics Assessments

Here at Wellington Sports Med we have Running Biomechanic Assessments available for all patients.

What are Running Biomechanic Assessments?  They are valuable tools to use if you run as a sport or use running during a sport.

Laura Seary – Physiotherapist, currently holds these sessions at our Kilbirnie.

Are these assessments applicable to me?

It’s a good idea to get your running assessed if you:

1. Suffer from overuse injuries and want to know why.

2. Are recovering from an injury and want to be able to progress your running while not over-loading the injured area.

3. You are wanting to improve your performance.

4. You are wanting to increase your enjoyment of running.

5. You are wanting to change your running form or have started barefoot running and you are not sure if you are running correctly and safely.

What do I need to bring?

Bring your usual running clothes along to the assessment, along with your running shoes. If you have several pairs of shoes and want to know which pairs you run better in, bring up to 3 pairs along with you. When it comes to clothing choices, wear tighter fitting or shorter fitting items as it makes it easier for us to see what you are doing.

Weather permitting, we will do the assessment outside, unless you habitually run on a treadmill.

What is involved in the session?

The session will begin with a discussion of your goals for the session and what your needs are with regards to your running.

Your running gait will then be analysed. It’s unlikely you will run more than 1-2km in total during the assessment process. Video may be used as part of this process.

You will be given specific drills to change aspects of your running gait, and reassess.

This is a trial and error process to find the perfect drills for you to use as part of your warm ups when running. The purpose of using drills is to use a motor learning process rather than a cognitive learning process to make the movement more natural, and to give you a tool you can use when you are out running.
